Currently Looking For

I’m immediately interested in books that take a familiar situation or trope and change it: space opera with predominantly female characters, fantasy stories in which white characters are rare and characters of color tell their own stories, and romance stories in which the expected payoff happens early and then the characters deal with that. I’m also very interested to read stories about characters doing anything other than playing to stereotype: stories about women that are not about protecting a child, achieving a relationship with a man at any cost/to be complete, being rescued by a man as if she doesn’t have agency of her own, avoiding rape or the threat of rape, or getting fridged (dying or getting threatened/injured/shunted out of the story so that the male MC can have sad feelings about it); disabled characters whose disability is a casual detail in the story or may affect the story but whose story is not about pity/how sad they are, overcoming that disability, or becoming “fixed” (especially stories with disabled main characters); fat characters/characters of size who are not the villain/antagonist, who are not stereotypically sloppy, lazy, stupid, or clueless, and whose story is not about losing weight or undergoing a transformation to become thin/different/“the person they were inside all along.” Yes, that’s a lot of “not this,” but these stereotypes are so dominant, anything outside that is refreshingly new and different — and it gives authors a lot of room to play with the rest of the story.
